LOVER, COME BACK is an age old story: boy meets girl, girl tries to expose boy as an advertising fraud, boy pretends to be gay to keep his lie from being exposed. What could possibly go wrong? For the month of August, we’re going back to 1960s, and gearing to laugh our butts off with the 1961 queer coded film LOVER COME BACK, starring DORIS DAY and the strapping and handsome ROCK HUDSON!!

Jerry Webster (played by Hudson) is a naughty boy. He lies and cheats to get what he wants in the advertising business. Whether its getting a client full on booze and pretty girls, or stealing clients from rival companies, Jerry will do whatever it takes to succeed. But he may have met his match in Ms Carol Templeton (played by Day), his sworn enemy at the competing agency. She learns of his underhanded ways and plans to expose him to the Ad Council, which included enlisting a pretty chorus girl for a client HER COMPANY was scouting. But, quick thinker that Mr Webster is, he has the girl defend him to the council. But Rebel, the chorus girl, wont do something for nothing. She wants something in return. So Jerry tells her she can be the spokeswoman for an illustrious new product called VIP….which doesnt exist!!! So he makes commercials, with the intent they never see the light of day. Rebel thinks she’ll become famous, Jerry’s lies stay secret, his rival gets off his back. Everyone is happy

That is until the company president and his friend Pete (played by famed character actor Tony Randall) allows the commercials to air!!! This puts Jerry in the compromising position to actually create VIP. So he enlists Nobel Prize winning reclusive scientist Dr. Linus Tyler to create VIP. But Carol is still on the hunt to expose the rat that is Jerry Webster. So things REALLY begin to get interesting, when one day Jerry and Carol actually meet, in Dr. Tyler’s office. Once again, Jerry has to think fast, so he assumes the identity of Dr. Tyler to a disarming Carol. Dr Tyler is known to many as a “certified woman hater” (not that kind, the coded gay kind), he has no clue how to get a woman to love him. He’s timid, humble and harmless as a flea, nothing like playboy Jerry Webster. In time Carol & “Linus” begin a slow burning friendship, where Carol tries to bring out the confidence in him, though he has no faith in changing. Jerry begins getting feelings too, but he has to keep the lie going, to save his job, his reputation, and keep his butt out of jail! Ohh what a tangled web we weave….
